Hey Ruby...
k first off, i am a MAJOR fan of your journal... major major... with each entry i read i agree with myself more and more that you really should just compile them all, put them in a book, and wait for the money to sail in... because i most certainly know i would fork out $19.99 to read 493 pages of the most random encounters you have in your life... you make them all SO funny and interesting, even the most minor seeming things.

ANYHOW- all praise aside, i do have a question for you. It's actually a worry of mine... and ive been thinking "god i wish there was some community where i could go and ask about this and people would know the answer"... but i dont know of any, so i thought id let ya take a shot at it:
Im on birth control, see... been on it for oh bout a year... and then recently this past month, i was expecting a visit from my boyfriend (we're apart for the summer)... and it happened to be that he was visiting RIGHT on the days when i was supposed to take those horrid little green devil pills that cause you to bleed your life away... and of course i didnt want to have my period during my boys visit.... so i had heard that you could totally just skip over those green pills and go right on to the next months pills, completely skipping over your period. This sounded heavenly, so without letting my brain or good sense get a word in, i started the next months pills immidiately, passing over the period completely. The boy came, it was very good. So my worry now... as im almost all the way through this months pack, is... if i took almost all of last months pack... and ovulated that 3rd week... then there was an egg in me, as the pill likes to trick your body to think that you're pregnant. The green pills as i understand, are just sugar pills, to make your body flush out that random egg.... but since i never did that... and then had sex (unprotected sex, and quite a bit of it)... and now... perhaps theres ANOTHER egg inside of me since i never dumped the last one... does this make my risk of getting pregnant more possible or likely? Cause ive had pretty damned bad cramps the last week, annnd i randomly threw up this morning, so of course that got me thinking the worst. I dont know if it makes any difference at all to the pills protection of me, just wanted to see if maybe you could find any info on that, itd be GREATLY appreciated!!
Thanks!
a big fan,
erica

Hi Erica, I'm not Ruby but I do know a bit about the pill.

First, don't skip the sugar pills. Your body does not exactly ovulate when you're taking the pill, but it does need to 'clean house' once a month, thus the need for the sugar pills. You can open yourself up to all sorts of ickiness if you don't let yourself have some sort of period each month.

What's making you feel funny is more likely the over-charge of hormones you now have in you from not giving your system a break. You could also be pregnant because of throwing the system off. Hormones are tricky things that way.

Your best bet is to go to see your gynocologist, and NOW. That way if you can get your system regulated again, great. If you are pregnant, you have options. And they can certainly explain MUCH better than I can why you need to take that week off each month.

Erica, I hope you went and saw your gyno, but here's some more info:

Skipping your period is fine on birth control pills. With monophasic pills (pills that only have one level of hormones), it's easier to do so than it is with triphasic pills (pills that have 3 levels of hormones like OTC), but everyone receives different results. I don't know which one you're on, so I can't say for certain. You'd need to ask your gyno, or your pill's website. You really don't NEED a "period" every month, but at least every three months (thus the popularity of the Seasonale pill, which does that very thing - one period every three months).

As you may know, the Pill does a couple of things - the first is that it prevents ovulation. No egg is released at all. On the teeeeeensy chance it does, the Pill also has hormones that change the lining of your uterus to make it inhospitable to allowing an egg to attach, in case you DID ovulate.

There are three weeks of pills, and then one week of placebo pills, your green ones, which contain no hormones. This abrupt hormonal withdrawal causes your body to have a "period." This is to reassure women that they're not pregnant, and is in fact unneccesary (which is why you can "Skip" your "period" and go on to the next pack, or take the Seasonale pill (which skips two in every three months).

So, it's perfectly fine to go straight on to the next pack, throwing your placebo pills away (please note that I am not a health professional, and you should verify that your pills ARE the kind that can do this, with a pharmacist, doctor, nurse or your pill's website). Now, this continued hormones may screw you up a little bit (which is why you felt bad) -- thus it's recommended not to skip very often (and why even the Seasonale pill makes you haev four periods per year).. You might even expereience some breakthrough bleeding (spotting that's not a period.)

I hope this helps. As long as you kept taking Active pills, you are protected against pregnancy (again, when verifying that your pills are the kind that you can skip on).

You can read a ton more about which pills this is ok on, and more about 'skipping' a period, at the birthcontrol community, http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=birthcontrol .

Their general FAQ answers some common questions about BC, like how it works, WHY you have to take "placebo" pills, and how to skip your period: http://www.livejournal.com/community/birthcontrol/2055685.html .

Good luck, Erica, and I hope I helped clarify your understanding :)
